NAHB is joining with official safety sponsor Builders Mutual to highlight jobsite safety resources during National Safety Month, an annual observance from the National Safety Council.

Week 3 will focus on safe driving to, from, and around the jobsite.

Traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of deaths in America. About 40,000 people die in motor vehicle crashes each year. With automobile fatality trends increasing, it’s important to understand the dangers of driving and how to safely commute to and from work each day.

NAHB and Builders Mutual have resources available to help remind workers of safe driving habits.

Any discussion of safe driving must start with a clear reminder of the three unbreakable safety rules of operating a vehicle:

  1. Always wear a seatbelt while in a vehicle
  2. Never drive while impaired
  3. Never text and drive

Everyone with a driver’s license knows this, but it seems that many drivers need constant reminders. Employers should also remind workers of company policy allowing only drivers with active state-issued licenses to drive to and from jobsites.

NAHB has a video toolbox talk on safe driving, embedded below, that can be used to facilitate brief stand downs or toolbox talks to remind workers of safe driving habits. The video is also available in Spanish as is a one-page handout accompanying the video.

Builders Mutual also has a great blog post with safe driving techniques for construction workers.

Safe driving is not a choice, it is an imperative when hitting the roads. Consistent reminders to workers can help everyone arrive safe at the jobsite in the morning and at home in the evening.
