The KB Home ProjeKt concept home was developed as a prototype smart home of the future, which breaks new ground in home building by transforming design and construction processes to address “where tomorrow lives” for everyday buyers of new houses in new neighborhoods. Recognizing that Americans spend a majority of their lives indoors and that a home’s indoor environment can have a significant impact on its resident’s health, a number of smart technologies were installed in KB Home ProjeKt to monitor aspects of daily life, from air and water quality to temperature and lighting. Interior lighting could be programmed to mimic natural circadian rhythms, with lights automatically adjusting to match the time of day, and ideal sleep conditions were optimized with room-darkening shades and special noise-damping drywall. With a concerted effort to exceed energy-efficiency standards, the concept home was precision manufactured to create a tighter envelope. The overall liveability of the house was enhanced by designing the space with flexibility in mind. A movable wall in the great room allows for the space to be changed throughout the day, allowing for more efficient use as it changes from office or studio to bedroom or entertaining area. The second-floor features bedrooms as well as a gathering space with a small kitchen, which can accommodate an extended family, a caretaker or even an Airbnb renter, as this area also has a separate entrance. This flexibility was designed with a long-term view, taking into consideration what tomorrow may bring as family structures and needs change.
