NAHB encourages all members to join the Federation and official safety sponsor Builders Mutual in recognizing June as National Safety Month, an annual observance to promote hazard awareness in residential construction and to help keep workers safe on the jobs.

Each week in June will focus on a different workplace safety topic, aligning with the campaign from the National Safety Council. NAHB encourages members to hold brief safety stand downs each week on the designated safety topics.

The first week focuses on continuous improvement.

Having a strong written safety plan is the first step in a safe home building site. NAHB’s Safety & Health Program is designed to help small and medium sized home builders seamlessly create safety policies and procedures and includes posters and notices to be posted on jobsites.

The plan is also set up in modules to make continuous improvement easier. Contractors can review any individual section with employees to emphasize certain safety issues.

For example, Section 11 sets policies and procedures for subcontractor safety on the job site. Hold a brief safety stand down one morning to review subcontractor safety policies. The same can be done with other sections.

NAHB also offers a seven-minute Safety Basics video toolbox talk, embedded below, that home builders can occasionally show to their workers to serve as a reminder of proper safety procedures.

Builders Mutual’s WorkSafe program also focuses on continuous improvement by providing safety training resources home builders can use for new hires and seasoned pros.

A true culture of jobsite safety involves continuous improvement, updating, and reminders to workers about safe working. Visit nahb.org/safety for all available safety resources.
