Project Statement
For many years, the need for housing that responds to the unique needs of military veterans in Orange County has been unmet, especially for those veterans who are homeless and struggling to survive on the streets. In collaboration with the City of Santa Ana, the Veterans Administration (VA) and four other leading veterans service organizations, a nonprofit developer built Heroes Landing — the largest permanent supportive housing development for veterans in Orange County.
Heroes Landing is a new construction, permanent supportive housing community for 75 homeless veterans and their families. This innovative development is a “a sanctuary of stability and a hub of hope” for some of Orange County’s most vulnerable veterans.
Heroes Landing features a U-shaped, three-story building situated around a central courtyard. Seventy-six fully furnished one- and two-bedroom apartments each includes a private open space by way of a balcony. Interior design of common areas features a variety of large murals in the lobby and community room, commissioned and designed by a local artist, dedicated to the branches of the U.S. armed forces and the history of Santa Ana.
The residential space opens onto a spacious courtyard, with nearly 10,000 square feet of active open space — including a community garden and reflection walk — and a 4,500-square-foot community center that is home to a veterans’ services collaborative, where residents are offered counseling and therapeutic services that address mental health and substance abuse issues, as well as general support for daily living, employment services, and legal assistance. The construction and opening of Heroes Landing was managed in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, safely moving 75 homeless veterans from the street into new, full-furnished affordable apartment homes.
