Project Statement
Sitka is a seven-story, 384-unit market-rate building in Seattle’s thriving South Lake Union neighborhood. The project’s design responds to varied contextual conditions while evoking continuity with simple expressions and proportions. Three cabin-like buildings are slightly angled to create a concave backdrop to the adjacent historic Cascade Park, while the south wing’s sloped green roof reflects regional forms and allows light into the courtyard. Northwest Modernism and the landscapes of the nearby San Juan Islands inspire the project’s regional identity. The full block project has four entrances at every street frontage, each representing an environmental characteristic of the Northwest mountains, meadows, forests and waterways, which act as passageways into the tree-filled courtyard. Sitka’s amenities enhance the concept of an environmental retreat in an urban setting. An artistic interpretation of a tree house, rooftop community garden, and indoor/outdoor entertainment zones connect residents to nature, while the two-story indoor gym provides space to exercise. Sitka has achieved LEED Platinum Certification and utilizes cutting-edge technology, including an innovative wastewater heat recovery system, the first application of its kind in the country. The U.S. Green Building Council recently named Sitka one of 2020’s Outstanding Multifamily Projects as part of the LEED Homes Awards, making it one of the most sustainable multifamily buildings in the country.
