The Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (KCHBA) launched its Let Builders Build campaign with the goal of addressing government overreach, demonstrating home builders’ commitment to families in their communities and reclaiming housing attainability and affordability. The project was in response to a drastic drop in family permits following the city’s adoption of an unamended energy code that contributed to regional housing challenges and affordability issues for residents. The campaign engaged voters with research-based messaging and emotive calls for action to remove development barriers and encourage policy reform that would allow for more cost-effective homebuilding.
The initiative generated significant visibility of the challenges that needed to be addressed in the residential construction industry, achieving 629.9 million total views and more than 11,900 landing page visits by using a wide variety of outlets, including social media, television and direct mail. This strategy promoted actionable solutions for community members, families and local jurisdictions by focusing on real impacts and inspired Kansas City, Mo., city council members to adopt the KCHBA’s recommended amendments in the 2024 codes. By the campaign’s conclusion, housing attainability had been framed as urgent, actionable issue.
