The Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains (BABRM) formed the Disaster Recovery Task Force to support Western North Carolina’s recovery after Hurricane Helene. The initiative aimed to organize a strategic, collaborative response that addressed critical post-disaster challenges ranging from material and labor shortages to mental health and funding access. The task force was structured around five specialized working groups: Partnerships in Rebuilding, Health and Wellness, Outreach and Support, Education, and Funding and Government. These teams mobilized industry professionals, government partners and community organizations to ensure a comprehensive, efficient and equitable recovery effort, especially in isolated or disenfranchised communities.

The program succeeded by rapidly delivering emergency supplies, setting up critical communication infrastructure using Starlink devices and offering ongoing professional, logistical and emotional support. The task force continues to meet regularly to tackle long-term recovery issues such as zoning challenges, mental health concerns and rising material costs. Its collaborative model has built regional resilience, created sustainable support networks and ensured that the rebuilding process is inclusive, coordinated and community-driven.
