In 2024, the Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA)’s Custom Builders Council (CBC) launched its first-ever Mental Health Seminar to address the escalating mental health crisis in the home building industry. Construction professionals face some of the highest rates of anxiety, depression and suicide — statistics that have long gone unspoken within the field. Inspired by ProRemodeler Magazine’s feature on the issue, the seminar featured Managing Editor Caroline Broderick alongside CBC Immediate Past President Chris Bolio, who shared his deeply personal account of stress-induced health challenges, including a stroke. The program emphasized breaking the stigma surrounding mental health through open dialogue, data-driven insights and real-life testimonies, while also introducing a permanent online mental health resource hub at ghba.org/mentalhealth.
The seminar drew the second-largest audience of any CBC luncheon in 2024, garnered record sponsorship and became one of GHBA’s most-watched videos, reflecting the industry’s hunger for meaningful mental health conversations. This initiative not only educated and supported attendees but laid the groundwork for a lasting cultural shift by equipping builders and team leaders with tools, resources and strategies to prioritize mental well-being.
