The Home Builders Association of Greater Charlotte (HBAGC) launched Operation Tiny Home for families impacted by Hurricane Helene in partnership with Kelly McArdle Construction, Lowe’s Home Improvement, NASCAR and Habitat for Humanity Charlotte Region. The HBAGC helped construct and deliver 17 fully functional tiny homes to families who had been living in tents. More than 500 volunteers contributed during the six-day build in December 2024, with HBAGC leading operations by coordinating logistics, securing warehouse space, managing material deliveries and organizing volunteers of all skill levels. The homes were distributed across multiple cities, including Asheville, Swannanoa and Black Mountain, and delivered directly by NASCAR drivers.

Beyond its immediate results, Operation Tiny Home sparked a ripple effect of goodwill and replication. HBAGC volunteers first created the prototype and laid the foundation for a project that others have since expanded upon, including Habitat for Humanity Charlotte Region’s additional builds. Lowe’s committed to supplying 100 tiny homes in total, and the project gained national attention with coverage from Good Morning America and other major media outlets. Operation Tiny Home exemplifies innovation, rapid mobilization and deep community commitment by delivering more than shelter, but also hope, dignity and long-term housing solutions to families in crisis.
