In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina, the Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains (BABRM) launched a swift and strategic outreach campaign to protect storm victims from contractor fraud. With internet and cell service disrupted across the region, the association turned to radio to deliver targeted public service announcements. These radio ads provided clear, actionable guidance on verifying contractor licenses and identifying potential scams. BABRM also distributed official materials from the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors at municipal meetings and set up staffed information tables at disaster recovery centers to offer in-person support and connect residents with local, licensed contractors.
This multi-channel approach ensured that critical information reached residents when they were most vulnerable. The campaign successfully raised public awareness, prevented multiple instances of fraud and reinforced the importance of working with licensed professionals. By combining mass communication with on-the-ground engagement, BABRM protected community members from exploitation and increased visibility of local, licensed contractors during a critical recovery period. The project not only achieved its goals but also strengthened trust between the BABRM and its community.
