The Building Industry Association of Northern Kentucky (BIANKY)’s Enzweiler Building Institute (EBI), in collaboration with Adopt A Class, launched a strategic initiative to address the skilled labor shortage in the construction industry by engaging students, particularly from underserved communities, with hands-on experiences and mentorship in the trades. The program's core goals were to raise public awareness about the value of skilled trades, provide experiential learning opportunities, create career pathways for students and build strong partnerships between industry leaders, educators and government leaders. Through classroom, job site and trade school visits, building projects and direct mentorship from industry professionals, students gained real-world insight into careers such as carpentry, HVAC and welding.

The program’s impact was both measurable and meaningful. It was recognized as Adopt A Class’ Best Programming Partner of the Year, reflecting its effectiveness in expanding access to construction careers. Results included a rise in student interest in the trades, increased involvement from employers offering mentorships and apprenticeships, and stronger community ties that bridged the gap between education and employment. EBI’s model demonstrates how industry-driven outreach can inspire the next generation of skilled workers and support long-term workforce development across the construction sector.
