When Hurricane Helene swept through western North Carolina in 2024, Ashe County experienced devastating flooding, mudslides and high winds. More than 150 structures were destroyed in the county, about 550 suffered damaged and one storm-related death occurred. As flood insurance is uncommon in western North Carolina, most of these losses were not covered.
To help residents rebuild, the Ashe/Alleghany Home Builders Association partnered with the Ashe County Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG), a 501(c)(3) formed after the hurricane to assist the county’s most vulnerable households. The partnership received a $50,000 HBIDRF grant to support rebuilding efforts for home owners who were ineligible for assistance elsewhere and had below average incomes.
Home owners applied for individual grants through LTRG to rebuild, and Ashe/Alleghany HBA members provided project guidance and connected home owners with trusted local contractors to make repairs. The Ashe/Alleghany HBA also connected home owners with suppliers offering discounted materials for rebuilding efforts.
