Top 10 States for NGBS Green Certification Activity in 2022

With more than 400,000 homes certified to the National Green Building Standard (NGBS) since its launch in 2009, builders across the United States are continually adding to the pipeline of NGBS projects.

Here's a snapshot at the top NGBS Green certification activity in 2022 for both single-family and multifamily projects:

Top 10 States for NGBS in 2022

Two states rank in the top 10 for both single-family and multifamily projects in 2022: Maryland and Virginia. New states topping the multifamily certification list include Louisiana and South Carolina. New states and provinces topping the single-family certification list include Puerto Rico and Utah.

Overall, since the inception of NGBS, the top 10 states for both multifamily and single-family certifications combined are:

  1. Texas
  2. Florida
  3. North Carolina
  4. Georgia
  5. Virginia
  6. Maryland
  7. Colorado
  8. Indiana
  9. South Carolina
  10. Tennessee

The NGBS provides builders with a national standard to define and measure sustainable multifamily and single-family homes, developments and remodeling projects. Third-party green certification also offers consumers a level of confidence that they are purchasing an independently verified green property.
