The NAHB Senior Officers reiterated the importance of housing and homeownership to the economy and urged lawmakers to take steps to ensure an adequate supply of lumber and other building materials to help stem rising housing costs. They also stressed that a vibrant housing market is necessary in order to maintain robust job and economic growth. Discussions were held with several influential lawmakers, including:
  • Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.)
  • Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.)
  • Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.)
  • Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.)
  • Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.)
  • Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.)
In addition to discussing the need to address rising lumber prices and supply shortages, talks centered on the need to enact policies that would:
  • Provide a stable and affordable supply of credit for home buyers, home builders and rental housing;
  • Prevent federal intrusion into the energy codes development process; and
  • Craft a transportation and infrastructure package that takes housing affordability concerns into account.

You Can Bring Housing Home

NAHB members have a unique opportunity to build on the efforts of their leadership team by Bringing Housing Home® during the week of May 3-7. Congress will be in recess, allowing all those involved in the residential construction industry to meet with their federal lawmakers in their home districts to discuss the important issues listed above, as well as other matters that impact their businesses and communities. Visit BringingHousingHome.com for complete details and information on how to identify your representatives and invite them to a meeting.
