Mark Ellis Tipton served as president of NAHB in 1991. The chairman of the board of the Whistler Corp., Tipton is a second-generation builder in Raleigh, N.C. Tipton served as president of the North Carolina Home Builders Association in 1979-1980 and the Greenville (N.C.) Home Builders Association in 1978. In 1977, Tipton was named Builder of the Year by the Greenville Home Builders Association, and in 1978 received its Distinguished Service Award. Tipton has served as an NAHB national vice president and is a life director. He has served on the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency since 1977. Tipton is also a member of the North Carolina Housing Industry Advisory Council, a joint industry council that advises the governor and legislature on housing-related issues.
