In 1998, Donald D. Martin, a second-generation builder, became the first home builder from New Mexico to serve as president of NAHB. Martin served as the Area 13 national vice president and was New Mexico’s national representative. He served as the 1979 president of the Central New Mexico Home Builders Association and was the 1979 Albuquerque Builder of the Year. Martin was president of the New Mexico HBA in 1979 and the Metro Denver HBA in 1986. A long-time advocate of affordable housing, Martin and Fannie Mae Chairman Jim Johnson established in 1998 a structure that resulted in more than 40 NAHB/Fannie Mae partnerships for affordable housing throughout the United States.
