Herman J. Smith served as NAHB president in 1981. A builder-developer from Fort Worth, Texas, he is owner of Stonybrooke, Inc. and Herman J. Smith & Co. Smith is a past president of both the Texas and Fort Worth builders associations. He is a former mayor of Hurst, Texas. Smith also served as chairman of the Texas governor’s Council on Housing for six years and is chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank of the Ninth District.
