John C. Hart served as president of NAHB in 1976. Hart was president of the Gateway Corp. and Hart Development Co. and was a prominent builder/developer in the Indianapolis area, building over 11,000 single-family and multifamily homes. He served as president of both the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis and the Home Builders Association of Indiana. As NAHB President, Hart sanctioned the BUILD program, Housing Hall of Fame, and a campaign focusing national attention on government’s costly intrusion into housing. Hart also had an active political career beginning in 1968 with his election to the Indiana State House of Representatives. Hart was instrumental in the formation of the Indiana Housing Finance Authority (IHFA), where he was appointed the chairman of the board and executive director in the early 1980’s.
