Methodology
The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) releases the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) report each quarter. Within the report, there is an underlying detail table titled Private Fixed Investment in Structures by Type, Chained dollars. One of the line items under the ‘Residential’ heading in this table is for Improvements. However, the Improvements category is aggregated at a national level, not by state.
As remodeling spending by state cannot be directly measured, the NAHB Economics & Housing Policy team created an econometric model which is designed to take an aggregate measure (e.g., Improvements category from the GDP report) and provide more granular estimates (e.g., Improvement spending by state) based on benchmark and proxy variables.
