Larger associations in major metros include positions focused on advocacy, technical issues, membership marketing and communications. Smaller associations have fewer staff and more opportunities for a jack of all trades. The Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association (WCFHBA) is a trade association representing more than 1,850 member firms and serves as the unified voice of the building and development industries. WCFHBA is the second largest Home Builders Association (HBA) in the state. The Association promotes homeownership, responsible growth, community involvement and protects property rights.
Job Description
The Director of Membership Services is responsible for managing and enhancing membership programs and services within the Association. This role involves developing strategies to increase membership enrollment, retaining existing members, and improving overall member satisfaction. The Membership Director works closely with other departments to align membership initiatives with the organization’s goals and objectives, ensuring a seamless experience for all members. A successful Membership Director will possess strong leadership qualities, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of the organization’s mission and values.
Position Responsibilities
- Managing membership and coordinating the 3-in-1 membership for each member of record with NCHBA, and NAHB using the Associations Membership Database and NAHB’s WMS protocols.
- Developing partnership agreements, processing and invoicing.
- Serving as team leader in developing and implementing innovative member recruitment, engagement and retention initiatives and strategies.
- Managing non-dues revenue partnerships and developing, invoicing and processing sponsorship agreements.
- Serving as the staff liaison to the Cape Fear Professional Women in Building (PWB).
Position Requirements
- Excellent interpersonal skills that can be utilized to establish and build relationships with a broad range of members, current and potential partners, vendors and other association stakeholders.
- Proven ability to collaborate on the development and implementation of sound, cost effective marketing strategies that generate a high return on investment.
- Exceptional problem-solving, prioritization, communication and organizational skills.
- A disciplined, self-starter who is confident, communicative and reliable.
- Using Associations Membership Software Systems to track members and prospect engagement to ensure that WCFHBA’s suite of programs and services meet and exceed our member value proposition.

Job Description
The Vice President or Director of Government Relations is the chief strategist and spokesperson for the association’s government affairs and advocacy efforts. The ideal candidate is passionate about promoting the home building industry, assertive, well-connected, and proactive in developing relationships with elected officials, regulators, and key stakeholders to advance the association’s mission.
Position Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a robust government relations strategy that aligns with the HBAs commitment to advancing pro-housing and pro-building policies that promote community growth and economic health.
- Lead targeted initiatives to support and elect candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to the home building industry and affordable housing solutions within Charleston and its surrounding counties.
- Monitor, analyze, and communicate legislative and regulatory developments that affect the home building sector, enabling members to anticipate and adapt to changes.
- Advocate with conviction on behalf of membership interests with government entities and regulatory agencies, ensuring that policy decisions protect and enhance the industry’s ability to meet community housing needs.
- Cultivate and sustain strategic relationships with elected and public officials, regulatory bodies, trade associations, community groups, and industry partners to build broad-based support for the association’s policy objectives.
Position Requirements
- Minimum of six years of demonstrated success in government affairs, public policy, or legislative advocacy, ideally within the construction, real estate, or related fields.
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, public administration, business, or a related discipline; advanced degrees preferred.
- Deep knowledge of the political and regulatory environment in Charleston and the state of South Carolina or a comparable city and state.
- Expertise in analyzing complex legislation and regulations and framing advocacy positions grounded in data and real-world impact.
- Experience in managing advocacy campaigns, grassroots mobilization, and political candidate support.
Compensation Details
The compensation package includes a base salary commensurate with the candidate’s experience and industry expertise, complemented by performance-based incentives tied to successfully raising of Political and Legal Action Funds and advancing policy wins across the region.
Additionally, the role includes an end-of-year profit-sharing opportunity, health insurance, retirement contributions, paid time off, and professional development resources.
