Last week, the Home Innovation Research Lab certified its 750,000th green home in the National Green Building Standard (NGBS) program. Since its launch in 2009, home builders across the United States have continually added to the pipeline of NGBS projects, with recent activity accelerating.

To underscore the growing popularity of NGBS certification, 2025 marked the second consecutive year with over 100,000 homes certified in a single year.

The NGBS provides home builders with a national standard to define and measure sustainable multifamily and single-family homes, developments and remodeling projects. Third-party green certification also offers consumers a level of confidence that they are purchasing an independently verified green property.

Here’s a snapshot of the top NGBS Green certification activity by state in 2025 for both single-family and multifamily projects:

Five states rank in the top 10 for both single-family and multifamily NGBS certifications in 2024:

  • Texas
  • Florida
  • North Carolina
  • Georgia
  • Virginia

Texas once again tops multifamily certification, and Florida took the top spot for most single-family certifications for the second consecutive year.

NGBS certification activity generally aligns with areas that are seeing the most new home building. Indiana is a new addition to the multifamily certification Top 10, and Georgia, Ohio, Delaware and Illinois are new additions to the single-family list.

The NGBS program is administered through Home Innovation Research Labs™. Builders can learn more about the value of NGBS Green certification at nahb.org.
