NAHB mourns the passing of Kim Shanahan, who was a member of the Sustainability & Green Building Subcommittee and the Environmental Issues Committee, and was an active participant with the National Green Building Standard. Shanahan lived much of his life in Santa Fe, New Mexico and served as the executive officer of the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association (SFAHBA).

After serving his community as a longtime contractor, green building code expert and affordable housing advocate, Shanahan and his longtime partner moved to Costa Rica, where he died on Friday, April 25. He is remembered throughout both the green building and Santa Fe communities for his heart and passion for sustainable housing and energy efficiency.

Shanahan attended Michigan State University before spending 35 years as a general contractor. He became the executive officer of SFAHBA in the early 2000s and after leaving the association in 2018, became a sustainability consultant focusing on water conservation, indoor air quality, energy efficiency and affordable housing. He also wrote a weekly column called “Building Santa Fe” for The New Mexican, the city’s local publication.

Shanahan is survived by his children, Isabel and Lyle, and his partner, Lisa Boegl. Although no memorial service has been planned, well-wishers can show support by donating to Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity in Kim Shanahan’s name.
