NAHB has partnered with SkillsUSA, a national education nonprofit focused on workforce development. The partnership will help close the skilled labor gap and create a workforce that is essential to meet the strong demand for housing.

SkillsUSA is the national organization for students in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education. It sponsors the SkillsUSA Championships annually to recognize the achievements of career and technical education students and to encourage them to strive for excellence and pride in their chosen occupations.

NAHB encourages all those who are interested in helping to attract the best and the brightest to the residential construction industry to take part in SkillsUSA activities. There are several ways to get involved:

  • Be a volunteer judge at a state and local competition. View the State Directors list to access contact information and state conference dates.
  • Help start a student chapter at a local school if there is interest from students and school faculty.
  • Be a mentor to a student. By sharing your knowledge, experience and expertise, you can help foster the confidence and encourage the curiosity of students who want to pursue a residential construction career.
  • Offer a summer job to a student. Employment provides a valuable opportunity for home builders to engage with talent to meet their skilled labor needs.

The investment in these top students helps create a talent pipeline for the construction industry.

Judging a SkillsUSA Competition is a minor time commitment for an industry professional, but allows you to see quality young craftsman sharpening their skills while under the pressure of a competition.
