Statement from NAHB Chairman Dean Mon on Passage of Yes in My Backyard Act
Dean Mon, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a home builder and developer from Shrewsbury, N.J., today issued the following statement after the House approved the Yes in My Backyard (YIMBY) Act:
“The House vote to approve the Yes in My Backyard (YIMBY) Act will help address a key impediment to housing affordability – overly restrictive local land use policies. The measure requires local governments applying for Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to detail specific policies they are implementing to eliminate barriers to affordability. NAHB studies show that regulatory requirements account for almost 25% of the cost of constructing a single-family home, and roughly 30% of the cost of a multifamily unit. The YIMBY Act is a common-sense way to incentivize local governments to implement housing affordability solutions. NAHB urges the Senate to approve the companion legislation in a timely manner.”
