San Francisco Home Renovation Named ‘Remodel of the Year’ in National Design Competition

Press Release

The four-story Glen Park Residence in San Francisco, renovated to showcase remarkable Bay Area views while providing comfortable everyday living, was named the Remodel of the Year in the 2017 Best in American Living Awards (BALA) today by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

Designer CSS Architecture and builder MT Development Inc. teamed up to create a remodel that would capture views, bring in daylight, and establish a sense of calm through simplicity and open space.

Large windows and minimalist white walls draw the eye to the views, which become more and more amazing as one moves up through the four floors of the house. On the top floor is the main living space, with views of the city and beyond from the living room one way and views of the terraced yard from the kitchen the other.

The charcoal gray charred Cypress exterior sets the structure apart from its neighbors. A pop of color from red recessed entryway accentuates the distinctiveness.

Landscape architect/designer SCULPT Gardens, Inc., designed each level of the terraced yard with a unique function. One level sports an outdoor kitchen and fire pit, another has a hot tub and the next a lawn.

BALA judges commended the renovation’s sculpted interior with its clean surfaces and strong sight lines. They applauded the use of glass to reveal views and the innovative exterior with its attention grabbing red portal.

“Great design taps into the emotions that make a house a home,” said Tom Kopf, NAHB 2017 Judging chair and 2017 Best in American Living Awards Subcommittee chair. “The BALA program celebrates the designers and builders as ‘the best of the best.’ ”

In its 34th year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international. Award winners were announced at the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Orlando.
