Home in Texas Hill Country Named Home of the Year in National Design Competition

Press Release

Augusta, a 3,600-square-foot custom home with dramatic golf course views in Boerne, Texas, was named Home of the Year today in the 2017 Best in American Living Awards (BALA) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

Augusta’s balance of stone, wood, and metal opened up with floor-to-ceiling glass creates an elegant modern residence that recalls historical Texas homes from the 1800s.

Its main design feature is the living room, transparent from front to back through floor to ceiling glass that is framed in rich wood and metal. Limestone side walls extend beyond the glass, further connecting the inside to the outdoors. A weathered steel guardrail along the cantilevered deck outside the living room creates privacy for the interior spaces while preserving the sweeping view of the golf course.

Beyond the dramatic living room, the four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bath home is designed to provide owners and guests their own zones of living. A guest house allows additional visitors to find their own place of privacy.

BALA judges praised the extensive use of glass and noted how the stone on walls and floor tie the design together, saying it feels like you’re living outside in every space.

“Great design taps into the emotions that make a house a home,” said Tom Kopf, NAHB’s 2017 Judging Chair and 2017 Best in American Living Awards Subcommittee Chair. “The BALA program celebrates the designers and builders as ‘the best of the best.’ ”

The house was designed by Craig McMahon Architects, Inc. and built by Johnny Canavan Custom Homes, both based in San Antonio.

In its 34th year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international. Award winners were announced at the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Orlando.
