The Safety Award for Excellence (SAFE) recognizes those in home building who have made successful efforts to advance jobsite safety in the industry. NAHB and its official safety sponsor, Builders Mutual, congratulate the 2021 winners.
The winners were honored at a ceremony in the IBS Jobsite Safety Zone on the show floor at the 2022 International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Feb. 8-10.
NAHB Safety Champion of the Year
Asheville, North Carolina
Buchanan Construction hired their first full time safety manager in March 2020 and Joshua Hollingsworth immediately hit the ground running. The company did not have a health and safety program that was implemented or tailored to the company. He started from ground zero creating and developing a living breathing program that continues to evolve. Hollingsworth was able to create a highly effective safety program in the middle of a global pandemic. He has the responsibility of monitoring all jobsites, and not just Buchanan employees, but also the subcontractors on the sites.
Job-Site Safety Institute Innovative Safety Idea of the Year
The NRP Group
The NRP Group is a fully integrated, premier apartment developer, general contractor and property manager. NRP’s Innovative Safety Idea is their newly implemented Digital Subcontractor Safety Orientation, accessed by using QR codes posted on their projects. Due to the pandemic, NRP created a way for new subcontractors to view and complete the company’s safety orientation on their own mobile devices without mass gatherings in the job trailer. The use of QR codes not only ensures pandemic safety protocol is observed, but it also efficiently checks for safety orientation understanding.

In business since 1950 and with third-generation family ownership and management, Winchester Precast manufactures precast concrete storm and wastewater structures, septic tanks, box culverts and light pole bases. Employee involvement and celebration of safety achievements is their key to success. Employees actively participate in safety ideas and problem solving. They actively look for ways to celebrate even small accomplishments so that employees realize and remember how important safety is.

Menzner Hardwoods was founded in 1894 by Phil Menzner’s great grandfather, and was subsequently run by his grandfather, then his father and now Phil. Menzner is a leader in the hardwood molding industry, with over 300 employees in Wisconsin and sets the bar in building and maintaining a top tier safety culture. They have changed the safety mindset of their management, employees, contractors, and vendors.
Single Family Builder Safety Program of the Year (Fewer than 10 Home Starts Per Year)
For the past 30 years, Sea-Dar Construction has been building a wide range of construction projects. From luxury urban residences and fine suburban custom homes, to large, technically complex institutional and commercial structures, each is managed with the same commitment to quality and customer service. Sea-Dar Construction is striving to become a model for safety among contractors across the industry, and especially of their size. In the past year they have expanded their safety program from a single safety officer to a full committee consisting of Project Managers and field staff.

Founded in 1976, RA Nelson LLC is an employee-owned full-service general contractor headquartered in Avon in Colorado’s Vail Valley with a regional office near Aspen in the Roaring Fork Valley. They offer preconstruction, construction management, general contractor services, and post construction/property management services. RA Nelson proudly fosters a culture of safety. The responsibility is placed upon each individual employee to point out hazards and suggest improvements. Safety is the very first topic they discuss at all-company meetings and safe behavior is heavily tracked and rewarded. As a company, they are focused on growing a learning culture, with a mentor program and monthly sessions dedicated to lessons learned.

F&S Building Innovations was founded in 1976 and is a leading commercial and residential contractor in the Roanoke area. F&S Building Innovations Safety Program is built on the support of the company leadership and the inclusion of all levels of operations in program development, implementation, and enforcement. F&S works on innovative approaches to develop and deliver the elements of its Safety Program as well as continuous improvement. The effectiveness of the program is verified in the numbers through the EMR, the OSHA 300 reporting, and overall safety culture of the organization. The culture is genuine as evidenced by the care the leadership takes for F&S employees.

Greenleaf’s commitment to safety started in 1977 by participating in Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Comp Drug Free Safety Program. Since then, Dave Fleming (general manager) has been involved in Mid-Ohio Valley Safety Committee as past president, past board member, and current board advisory member. Greenleaf has been recognized by the Ohio BWC with 1.6 million hours of no accidents without loss time. This was a great milestone for a landscape company that has over 450 tires on the ground every day along with 90 employees during its peak season.

NAHB Student Chapter Safety Program of the Year
Build Smart Institute
Developed in 2020 in collaboration with Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association, Build Smart Institute starts its student chapter members into its entry level program HBI PACT and NCCER CORE Fundamentals of Construction. In this entry level CORE Program, all trainees obtain an OSHA 10 for Construction training card as well as a First Aid and CPR training card. There are trainees that come through the CORE Program as young as 14 years of age that obtain training and cards. These entry level programs are primarily hands-on, project-based learning. Throughout the applied learning the student safety training is continually implemented and reinforced in an applied and practical way.

J. Gary Hill is the Executive Director of the Job-Site Safety Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to conducting research for residential and commercial jobsites. He is also the Chairman of NAHB’s Construction Safety and Health Committee. Hill has been a leader in the residential construction industry for the past 40 years. His leadership and expertise have greatly helped the industry surpass construction safety milestones. Hill continues to help create safety education and research for the home building community.
Excellence in Mental Health (Industry Advocate)
Cal Beyer, VP of Workforce Risk and Worker Wellbeing at CSDZ, has over 30 years of safety, insurance, and risk management experience, with more than 25 of those years serving the construction industry. With his relentless positivity and passion for worker metal health and wellbeing, Cal has been instrumental in helping NAHB, its members, and the home building industry, prioritize mental health as part of a comprehensive safety program, placing it on equal footing with physical safety. A realist about construction risk factors, Cal also emphasizes hope, help and recovery.
