Alan has been a remodeler for over 40 years, running House of Hanbury Builders, with his brother Bob who recently retired, the 3rd generation of Hanburys that were contractors. He does both the office work and helps in the field so he understands making profits in all facets of this business. He has received the CGR, CAPS, CGP and GMR designations from NAHB and has a MBA from Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute. Alan has been teaching small contractors and remodelers since 1991, starting at the Remodeling Show in PIttsburg, and he has only missed 1 year as an instructor, motivator, and cheerleader for attendees success in this field .
He has presented at IBS since 1993 for both the education sessions and the pre show all day designation classes and is approved to teach 12 of those classes at last count. He has had a regular column in Professional Remodeler Magazine, had a 3 part piece in Remodeling Magazine. He has been interviewed by CNN, WSJ, USA Today and other local papers and radio stations on the subjects of aging in place, winterizing a home, avoiding scams and other various topics.
He has been a subject matter expert on all facets of the CAPS classes and principal author of the NAHB Designat course, Business Management for Building Professionals.
He has done presentations on pricing for profit, defensive estimating, Margin and Markup, Job Costing for Profit, Cash flow management and others at locals all over the country in the last 15 years. A firm believer in measuring results against expectations, getting what your worth, and staying lean and mean, his sessions are usually aha moments if you go in with an open mind.
He has 2 grown children who are not in the business and lives with his wife Debbie in Newington, CT
