1727 Honore

2011 Best in American Living Silver Award Winner for Single Family Detached Home 3001-4000 Sq Ft

In a neighborhood that attracts young singles and families, the design intent was to create a space for a move up buyer out of a condo into a single family that had the open loft feeling with the privacy of their own home. The property is situated on an extremely narrow city lot only 24' wide, thus a lack of width was a major consideration in designing the house. The end result was a sense of space.antastic trompe l’œil—despite the finished house being only 17.5' in width, the property has an unexpected, expansive space.

Several creative design touches were used to reduce the narrow character of the home. Banks of horizontal windows, as well as wrapped windows around the corner of the house, increase the sense of width. A glass wall was inserted along the staircase to extend the line of sight but maintain the stairway as part of the dining room composition. Exquisite use of flyover cabinetry not only maximizes kitchen space, but also unifies the entire floor. Built-in cabinetry houses electronics in the Great Room, and a Control 4 home automation system controls lighting, ventilation, sound system, and security cameras.

The epitome of what can be done with a limited amount of space, this home is not only sleek, clean, modern, and spacious, but also interesting. The high contrast interior finishes add drama — dark stained hardwood floors, light grey limestone countertops, floating cabinetry — and set it apart from other modern homes.
