Best in American Living Platinum Award for Green Community
The eight-acre Grow Community is a new urban development just a five-minute walk from Winslow village center on Bainbridge Island, WA, and ten minutes from the ferry to downtown Seattle. The City of Bainbridge Island's Housing Density Development Program allowed the project to increase units per acre and create neighborhoods that are both compact and comfortable.
The project has three phases: the Village, the Grove and the Park. Low-impact site development and net-zero energy designs with rooftop solar define the project. Extensive shared, organic gardens and a bike share program are already popular with the first residents in the Village. The community welcomes and embraces all generations and promotes aging in place. While home designs meet the needs of residents in all stages of life, a large share of interest is coming from baby boomers.
Based on interest, the design of more than 60 percent of future homes offer single-level, accessible floor plans. Sensible, open floor plan homes of modest size incorporate materials that are as chemical free as possible. Green building techniques and systems all contribute to ultra-energy-efficient homes with extremely low utility bills. The project design and proximity to Winslow town center provides opportunities for walking, biking and outdoor connections that promote residents' health and happiness.
