Plymouth, Mass. Development Named ‘Community of the Year’ in National Design Competition

The Pinehills, a mixed-use development of commercial space and residential homes in Plymouth, Mass., has been selected as the Community of the Year in the 2015 Best in American Living Awards (BALA) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

Eleven different builders add to the community’s variant neighborhoods, building homes ranging from condominiums and apartments, to custom homes and cottages. Pinehills, LLC, served as the community’s developer and land planner.

Portions of The Pinehills are densely designed, yet it manages to preserve more than 70 percent (2,200 acres) of open space. The community incudes 1.3 million square feet of mixed-use commercial space and 3,065 homes on only 30 percent of the land. Eight of its neighborhoods and more than 750 residences are considered to be within walking distance of it’s commercial hub, “The Village Green.”

Developers of The Pinehills sought to reinforce a committement to the environment and the community. The development has more than 30 community clubs for children and adults, 10 miles of walking trails, and maintained the nation’s oldest unpaved road in continous use—the 350-year-old Old Sandwich Road.

BALA judges commented that the development has the whole package, creating a total community that respects the topography and environment, with a quintessential New England feel.

In its 32nd year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international. Award winners were announced at the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.
