Home in Seattle Recognized in National Design Competition

January 21, 2016

A Seattle home, aptly named “Gallery House,” has been selected as the Pacific Northwest regional winner in the 2015 Best in American Living Awards (BALA) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). The home was designed by DeForest Architects and built by Joseph McKinstry Construction, both Seattle-based companies. Its interior designer was Jan Holbrook, also of Seattle.

Gallery House was designed around the home owners’ love for art. It features a light-filled “vertical gallery” that provides separation between public and private areas, along with alcoves that buffer the bedrooms and allow for additional art display locations.

The home itself is considered a work of art, a focal point being the translucent glass and steel staircase that glows from below and channels natural light from above. An expansive terrace off the living and dining rooms takes advantage of the home’s ideal location, offering idyllic views of the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountain.

BALA judges commented on the home’s warm feel, bringing together a mix of traditional and modern style. They also noted the dramatic architectural detail of the staircase that ties into the gallery-art focus of the whole house.

In its 32nd year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international. Award winners were announced at the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.
