Customer Service Equals Business Success for October's Remodeler of the Month

Joshua Edgell, a remodeler from Painesville, Ohio, knew from a very young age he would choose home building and remodeling as a career path. His interest in building quickly developed into a passion, eventually leading him to run his own business at JEMM Construction.

His company's continued success is only part of the reason why he was selected as NAHB's October Remodeler of the Month. He's been a dedicated member of NAHB Remodelers for several years, and he recognizes it is an integral part of his business' survival.

"Being a part of a national peer group has always been tremendously beneficial to us largely because of the countless connections we've made and camaraderie we enjoy with other professionals in our industry," Edgell said. "Our company is a design-build firm for remodeling projects as well as custom new homes, so the information shared among the members is invaluable."

But like most other business owners in 2020, Edgell has experienced numerous challenges as a result of COVID-19. Although the workload has been steady, most of the difficulties stem from limited product availability and rising materials prices — especially that of lumber. Finding creative solutions and adapting to evolving business practices have become essential.

"We made it through some really tough months, but we now have a full plate of projects and the leads have been pouring in," Edgell said. "However, we're still wrestling with the ebb and flow of product availability. Creating extended project timelines and dealing with pricing uncertainty have been the most challenging issues for us."

Through it all, Edgell says prioritizing customer service above all else continues to be his No. 1 key to success. Read Edgell's full Q&A in Qualified Remodeler.
