Last year, NAHB created resources to help construction managers and executives address the opioid crisis in the home building industry. The initiative, “Opioids in the Home Building Industry: Making it Your Business,” provides materials available to anyone in the home building and construction industries. The industry is still facing the acute challenges of a drug crisis while simultaneously grappling with labor shortages. A key focus of the NAHB initiative is to directly address opioid misuse and get workers safely back to work. One area of focus is dealing with potential overdoses on the jobsite. NAHB encourages builders to buy and receive training on the administering of the NARCAN® (naloxone) Nasal Spray to stop the effects of an opioid overdose. The pioneering program is intended to save lives, reduce the stigma and provide support and resources for those suffering from substance use disorders. “We’re so grateful for the opportunity to partner with the construction industry to save lives,” said PAARI on social media. All told, PAARI said that its representatives trained 155 individuals at IBS 2020 on how to use NARCAN and distributed 107 NARCAN kits to home building professionals. PAARI was joined at IBS by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy in promoting the use of NARCAN on jobsites. ONDCP State, Local and Tribal Affairs Coordinator Tom Murphy spoke to NAHB Immediate Past Chairman Greg Ugalde at the Meeting of the Members. Murphy explained the administration’s efforts to combat the opioid epidemic and demonstrated a NARCAN pack on stage. Watch his full presentation below.
