The NAHB Remodeler of the Year award recognizes superior business management, exemplary NAHB involvement at all levels and outstanding contributions to the remodeling industry. "Steve has become a distinguished remodeler over the last three decades by providing excellent work for his customers and his sincere enthusiasm [for giving] back to his local community and industry," said NAHB Remodelers Chair Tim Ellis, CAPS, CGP, CGR, GMR, Master CGP, a remodeler from Bel Air, Md. "We are thrilled to honor him with this prestigious award." Cunningham initially founded Cunningham Contracting Inc. in 1988 as a flooring and tile company, and eventually expanded the company into general contracting. As a longtime member of the Peninsula HBA and NAHB Remodelers, Cunningham has served in local and national leadership roles for both organizations, including 2016 president of the local association and 2017 chair of his local Remodelers Council. Cunningham admits there were several years earlier in his career during which he let his HBA membership lapse. Looking back, he sees many missed opportunities to learn more about the industry and how to grow his business. He chose to renew his membership in the early 2000s and says it was a pivotal decision that helped his business truly thrive. "[When] I was reintroduced to the HBA — being a little older and wiser — I decided to go full on, full steam into the industry and give back a little bit," Cunningham recalls. "Eventually, I hope my children will take over the business, and I wanted to set expectations for them about their commitment to the industry and to education. I got involved at the local level. I became president of my local association. And that led to being involved at national level to where we are today. It’s been the best thing I ever did for my business. I just wish I would’ve done it earlier." Earning Remodeler of the Year honors is the latest of many achievements throughout Cunningham's career. Some of his other notable accolades include being honored with the NAHB Remodelers Chairman's Distinguished Service Award in 2017, the NAHB Remodeler of the Month award in September 2018, the Best Builder Award from the Peninsula HBA and a Guild Quality GuildMaster Award. As part of its commitment to giving back to the community, Cunningham Contracting has built two houses for Habitat for Humanity as well as several other projects. Along with the local HBA, Cunningham helped remodel and design a young girl's bedroom with the RocSolid Foundation to benefit children with cancer. In 2017, Cunningham Contracting and the members of the local remodelers council fully renovated the home of a York County veteran. Cunningham will be honored on Jan. 21, 2020, during the NAHB Remodelers All-Stars Celebration in conjunction with the NAHB International Builders' Show in Las Vegas.
