As the residential construction industry continues to struggle with labor shortages, businesses and local home builders associations are finding new ways to recruit the next generation of skilled labor. Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month® is a public awareness campaign that takes place each February to celebrate the value of CTE.
Now is the time to begin laying the groundwork for your business or HBA to execute a successful CTE-focused activity or program.
CTE directly prepares students for high-wage, high-demand careers. This educational track encompasses a variety of fields from information technology to advanced manufacturing. Educational initiatives within CTE includes classroom learning, certification programs and other work-based learning opportunities outside the classroom.
Here are some ways you can help raise CTE awareness during the month of February:
- Participate in Job Shadow Week, Feb. 3-7. Host students for a day at your place of business, either individually or in small groups, so students can experience real-world examples of careers in action. Get started here.
- Host a Career Exploration Panel at your company or HBA, Feb. 10-14 to highlight rewarding job opportunities available in residential construction.
- Donate Equipment, Feb. 17-21. Students in secondary and post-secondary institutions need access to appropriate instruments for their future career fields. Consider donating equipment or supplies that meet industry standards to a local institution.
- Teach a middle school lesson plan for Teach-In Week, Feb. 24-28 to create excitement for technical career pathways. View sample lesson plans.
