With ongoing labor shortages and skilled trades needed in the construction industry, strategies to bring in young people to the field are critical. Thankfully, there are plenty of opportunities to get younger workers involved, even amid the industry’s challenges. Innovative solutions, such as pre-fabricated wall assemblies and modular home construction to increase efficiencies while integrating eco-friendly building materials, are starting to gain traction. Other opportunities include apprenticeships, internships and scholarships. One unique opportunity through NAHB's Sustainability & Green Building initiative includes the chance to attend the 2020 International Builders' Show (IBS). The scholarship aims to provide exposure to students and recent graduates in the construction industry to the world of high-performance homes. If you know someone who could benefit from going to IBS, NAHB is looking for students in two- or four-year school programs, vocational school, apprenticeship programs or recognized training programs, as well as recent graduates interested in green building techniques. Attending IBS can help individuals make the connections needed to jumpstart a new professional trajectory. Scholarship recipients will receive airfare (up to $600), hotel accommodations (four nights), and a full registration to maximize their experience, with access to numerous networking events, education sessions and the latest products in the industry. Throughout the three-day event, recipients will get to walk the expo floor to learn about new and innovative products, attend sustainability and green building education seminars and receive Continuing Education Units, tour green buildings in the area, and more. To learn more about application and eligibility requirements, visit Applications are due Nov. 15, 2019. If you have any questions about the application or requirements, please email Anna Stern.
