The Legal Action Committee announced the recipients of its latest round of legal aid grants at the NAHB Spring Leadership Meeting earlier this month in Washington, D.C.. For more than 40 years, the NAHB Legal Action Committee, formerly the Legal Defense Study Committee, has helped builder and developer members, as well as local and state HBAs, defray litigation costs on issues that are common to the industry and that may carry nationwide impact. NAHB's Legal Action Fund was able to extend support this year on multiple fronts. Land use and zoning issues continue to plague the home building industry. The fund announced support for builder members of the HBA of Greenville (S.C.) and the BIA of Central Kentucky in challenges against various municipalities that try to skirt around practical regulations put into place to ease residential development planning. The fund also provided assistance to the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association in an impact fee challenge. The Legal Action Fund has a proven track record of its support for NAHB members and HBAs. Just late last year, the fund helped HBAs in Nevada prevail in an important construction defect case. The Legal Action Committee will next consider applications for Legal Action Fund assistance at the Fall Leadership meeting in New Orleans.
