BUILD-PAC Fundraisers Get Creative

Home builders or art collectors? That was the question on everyone’s mind at last week's International Builders' Show when an NAHB-inspired piece of artwork sold for $1,500. The fundraiser — conducted through silent auction — benefited BUILD-PAC, NAHB’s federal political action committee, and was just a peek into the creative minds of NAHB members.

The artwork, commissioned by Morgantown, W.V.-based member Kent Pauley, depicts two comic-book style builders, expertly positioning the roof atop the NAHB logo. Pauley, a friend of the artist Richard Houlden, expressed his excitement about the result of the auction, saying that ownership of Houlden’s work came down to a bidding war, and that the winner was determined to take the work home with them.

Creativity and Determination Crop Up Across the Country

But this wasn't the only creative fundraiser for BUILD-PAC this year. Of the more than 100 fundraising events that took place over the past cycle, several stand out. One, hosted in Kansas City, Mo., by NAHB member Bob Frost, featured a cake-decorating competition, builder ingenuity and plenty of frosting. Frost said that the cake decorating breathed new life into a typical fundraising event, engaging members on the local level, and was one of the most successful events of which he’d been a part. He also did not deny that the event was at least in part inspired by his last name.

Another fundraiser that stood out, if not for creativity of design but for determination in execution, was conducted by NAHB member Billy Ray of Mississippi. Those familiar with Ray’s fundraising effort — including 2018 BUILD-PAC Chairman, Alicia Huey — described Ray as a fantastic example of someone who brought BUILD-PAC home and took the time and effort to call many potential donors in his state. Ray, who raised more than $10,000 through his personal campaign, is considered a BUILD-PAC Champion.   

"Without creative fundraising efforts by members, the PAC could not have raised more than $3.1 million in funds last election cycle that went toward supporting hundreds of key congressional races — with an 85 percent success rate," Huey said. And she hopes that these creative ideas inspire more members to get involved in BUILD-PAC during the 2019-2020 election cycle.
