2024 Presidential Candidates’ Housing Platforms
Housing is a critical component of the economy and is an important issue for voters in the 2024 election as the nation grapples with a housing affordability crisis.
NAHB has been a longtime advocate on the importance of housing and continues to work with both parties to address key issues around housing, including housing affordability, workforce development, and codes and standards. Bipartisan support and collaboration is necessary to create enduring housing policy.
The following are the official plans provided by each party and/or administration, including specific elements related to housing policy.
Kamala D. Harris
Housing Supply:
- Increase housing supply by 3 million new units in the next four years.
- Offer tax incentive to home builders to construct starter homes.
- Expand Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) for affordable housing.
- Create $40 billion innovation fund for local governments to fund local solutions to build housing.
- Streamline permitting processes and reviews.
- Repurpose some federal land for affordable housing.
Housing Demand:
- Provide $25,000 down-payment support for first-generation home owners and $10,000 tax credit for first-time home owners.
Rental Market:
- Remove tax benefits for investors who acquire large numbers of single-family rental homes.
- Ban on algorithm-driven price-setting tools for landlords to set rents.
Donald J. Trump
Housing Supply:
- Cut unnecessary regulations that raise housing costs.
- Open limited portions of federal land for affordable housing construction.
- Add a tariff of at least 10% on all imports from all countries.
Housing Demand:
- Promote homeownership through tax incentives and support for first-time buyers.
- Reduce mortgage rates by slashing inflation.
