8 Quick Tips on Getting the Most Out of PWB Week

Professional Women in Building Council
Councils and Committees
  1. LEAD a discussion in your community focused on this year’s theme Workforce Development for Women in the Industry or one of the daily topic themes featured throughout the week. Here are a few examples:
    • Host a breakfast networker or luncheon featuring a female speaker (consider a local PWB member) or panel discussing the theme of PWB week. Invite members of your HBA and members of your residential construction community. Remember to begin and/or end the event by sharing the benefits of having a PWB council or being a member, whichever is appropriate to your audience.
    • Plan a day with the Girl Scouts and teach them building skills like painting, plastering or tile grouting.
    • Invite NAHB Student Chapter members or local high school students who are interested in construction or home building and have them shadow a builder for the day. Take plenty of photos and share them with NAHB PWB to post in their news publications and social media outlets.
    • Invite NAHB student chapter members or students from a local trade school to lunch or evening reception for an opportunity to network with potential employers.
    • Pro Tips:
      • Take plenty of pictures of events and activities that take place during PWB Week. If you have an PWB Council at your HBA, include council signage in the photos.
      • Include research and economic data in articles and blog post on women in the residential construction industry. You can get data from NAHB PWB and other NAHB sources.
  2. ENGAGE through social media. By incorporating Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube in your weekly activities, you will reach a broader audience and supplement your current marketing outreach with minimal costs! Make a video of local tradeswomen, women-business owners in action sharing three reasons they think other women should enter the industry. NAHB will be promoting the week on its social media accounts, so you can share national posts with your audiences, or create your own. Use #PWBWeek19 hashtag on your social media posts to amplify your activities and to increase visibility for the message.
  3. CONNECT. Host a happy hour or after work gathering to highlight one of the daily themes of PWB Week. Advertise the event in a PWB Week section in your HBA and PWB websites, newsletters and emails.
    • Pro Tip: Use material in this toolkit to jump start a special tabloid section in your local HBA paper, newsletter or website. Display materials on a table your HBA during the week that spotlights women in HBA and PWB leadership positions, trailblazers, articles about women in the trades and organizations that support women in building.
  4. EDUCATE your members and community about PWB, your Council and HBA’s strong base of support for women in the residential construction industry. Invite influential female representatives from home building and remodeling companies or an industry consultant or legislator that supports home building to speak at an HBA forum. Use the housing forum to examine and discuss the state of women in housing, and make sure to invite the media.
    • Pro Tip: Use the NAHB PWB Week Media Resources as well as the Marketing and Advertising materials to provide the best signage and collateral materials.
  5. RAISE awareness about the future workforce of women in the industry. Through social media, newsletters, or a lightbox on your website on the ‘Future is Female Friday.’ Share information about the NAHB PWB/National Housing Endowment’s Strategies for Success Scholarship Fund and the NAHB PWB Building Hope Scholarship Fund that helps defray educational costs of students taking building related courses. You can also feature a scholarship recipient from your community.
    • Need a fundraising idea? Consider coordinating a walk/run — 5K, 10K. Use registration proceeds toward scholarships for women in the trades. Wear T-shirts with the NAHB PWB Week logo.
    • Pro Tip: Repost the NAHBNow posts related to women on social media. Consider changing your HBA’s profile photo during PWB Week to the PWB Week logo.
