Older homes can contain lead paint, which was outlawed in 1978 because lead is extremely hazardous. The Environmental Protection Agency now requires that contractors who work in homes built before 1978 be certified by the agency and use "lead-safe work practices," which unfortunately add costs to your remodeling project.
