The NAHB Seniors Housing Council (now the 50+ Housing Council) held its 2003 Best of Seniors Housing Design Awards ceremony on Jan. 21, 2003, during the International Builders' Show in Las Vegas, NV. The awards program recognized architectural and interior designs that brought quality, innovation, and spirit to the 55+ housing industry.
A 12-member panel of noted professionals in the 55+ housing field, including builders, architects, designers, and gerontologists, judged entries and presented 52 gold and silver awards to exisiting and “on-the-boards” projects in 25 categories, including active adult, independent living, and service-enriched categories. In addition to looking at the overall community and design, awards cited excellence for the community center, common area, interior design, model merchandising, and more.
Projects were judged on how effectively they responded to the housing demands and design needs of the burgeoning 55+ market as well as their overall success in meeting the distinct lifestyle requirements of mature consumers. Other criteria that was used included the project's marketability, budget, and the ability to work on a challenging site, to name a few.
