Top Communities Honored at Best of 50+ Housing Awards Gala

January 24, 2013 - The National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) 50+ Housing Council announced the winners of its 2013 Best of 50+ Housing Awards, which honor excellence and innovation in the design, development, lifestyle and marketing of housing for older consumers. The awards program was held during the International Builders’ Show (IBS) and showcases the latest trends in housing for the mature market.
“This year’s award recipients incorporated quality features and amenities that fit the lifestyle of the buyers and residents of their properties,” said NAHB 50+ Housing Council Chairman W. Don Whyte. “The winners have shown that they know their clientele’s wants and needs and have built communities that reflect that.”

Among the honorees was Magnolia Court in Manteca, Calif., which received a Gold award in the Best Green Community category. The location was a former retention basin for surrounding properties, and after the acquisition a new retention basin was built and placed below grade. The judges commended their water reclamation efforts, as 90 percent of the collected on-site water is used for irrigation. The project is also described as one of the first Virtually Net-Metered solar systems in California.

Another Gold winner, Waterstone at Wellesley in Wellesley, Mass., took top honors in the Mixed-Use Community category. The judges appreciated the use of lighting and the modern, open feel of the site. The judges also highlighted such amenities as private wine lockers, wine tastings for residents and a riverfront courtyard with a fire pit and putting green.

There were 37 Gold award winners, 44 Silver award winners and five entries honored with awards for innovation. View the complete list of this year’s winners at Images of winners and finalists are available upon request.
