Home Building Industry Disaster Relief Fund

The Home Building Industry Disaster Relief Fund (HBIDRF) has provided grants to charitable organizations that are working in areas impacted by disaster. Typically, the fund works with local NAHB members and affiliated home builder associations to identify charities and charitable projects to support through the HBIDRF.

Since this fund was established in 2005, the HBIDRF Board of Directors has approved over $1.6 million in grants that have been used in the following ways:

Education and training programs that focus on increasing the availability of skilled workers in areas affected by disaster. Those projects include:

  • Home Builders Institute (La.): to support the creation and/or expansion of job training programs in carpentry, concrete technologies, electrical HVA and plumbing.
  • The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation/Schoolof Construction (Miss): to develop and implement residential construction management and disaster response courses and alternate educational delivery mechanisms.
  • Home Builders Institute (Miss): to be used for PACT training program to train individuals in construction craft skills for jobs in Mississippi's GulfCoasthome building industry.

Programs that have a direct impact on rebuilding damaged community facilities and housing. Those projects include:

  • K-Bar-B Youth Ranch/Broadway, Inc. (La.): to help repair the nonprofit residential treatment facility for children.
  • Pine Burr Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America(Miss.): to help rebuild CampTiak.
  • GulfCoastWomen’s Center for Nonviolence (Miss.): to repair and rebuild damaged portions of the shelter and rape crisis center.
  • Southwest Mississippi Recovery Network (Miss.): to purchase building supplies and to repair homes in low-income, rural areas.
  • Carpenter’s Helper (Miss.): to fund charitable work that aims to correct deficient housing conditions for needy, disabled and disadvantaged community members.
  • United Way of Acadiana (La.): to repair as many households as possible in the Vermilion Parish.
  • Housing Solutions Summit(La.): to help fund educational and charitable assistance portions of a conference that provided a forum for consumers and builders to learn about rebuilding their homes and their communities.
  • Beacon of Hope Resource Center (La.): to cover volunteer activities for a rebuilding/clean-up project in New Orleans during NAHB's State and Local Government Affairs Conference.
  • West Virginia Katrina Relief Fund (Miss.): to purchase building materials for a team traveling to Mississippi to rebuild homes.
  • Salvation Army for El Paso Flood Relief (Texas): to help the El Pasoregion which suffered devastating floods in August 2006.
  • Florida Disaster Recovery Fund (Fla.): to meet the long-term recovery needs of Floridians impacted by natural disasters, restoring lives and communities.
  • Second Presbyterian Church (Ill): to purchase building materials for a team of Illinois builders traveling to Louisiana to rebuild homes.
  • Salvation Army of Kansas & Western Missouri (KS): to help Greensburg residents rebuild their homes that were devastated by the tornados.
  • Orland Park Church (Ill.): to purchase building materials for a team of Illinois builders traveling to Mississippi and Louisiana to rebuild homes.
  • Master Builders Care Foundation (WA): to help residents in Lewis County, Washington rebuild their homes that were damaged by severe floods.
  • The Lending Network (WA): to help residents in Thurston County, Washington rebuild homes that were damaged by severe floods.
  • Rock County United Way's Long Term Flood Recovery Fund (Wisc): to repair homes damaged by floods.
  • Louisiana Homebuilders Disaster Relief Fund (La.): to rebuild a home in New Orleans 9th Ward.
