Land Development E-Learning
Web and Audio Seminars

Land development is experiencing more setbacks and increased scrutiny due to the housing and finance issues that have been the centerpiece of the economic crisis in our country. In an effort to provide the most current information to our members and affiliates, NAHB's Land Development Committee is proud to offer a series of new web and audio seminars designed to keep our members informed of these changes. Whether your issues are impact fees, regulatory requirements or infrastructure tools, NAHB Land Development Committee provides the tools you need to stay ahead of the changes affecting land development and the housing industry. Please note that all webinars require Java software in order to run properly. If you do not have Java, please contact your IT administrator to have it installed on the system you will be using to view the presentation.

Over the past few years, global climate change has emerged as a hot-button issue. Congress, federal, state and local governments, and private interest groups are all exploring ways to combat the presumed effects of various activities on greenhouse gas emissions. For the building industry, this is translating into increased requirements for energy efficiency, reductions in vehicle miles traveled, and other measures that may affect where and how development may occur. This webinar will highlight how California’s landmark statewide legislation is playing out so far and detail the compelling results of NAHB’s extensive research program on climate change, which is aimed at bringing better science and data to the table in policy discussions on these issues.

'Stormwater VS. Smart Growth'

Presented on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 2:00PM EST

Sponsored by the NAHB's Land Development Committee, this webinar explores the conflicts between Smart Growth policy and stormwater requirements. New, aggressive stormwater requirements are streaming out of EPA on a regular basis, affecting both new development and redevelopment. Smart Growth concepts embrace the idea that new housing growth should be encouraged in urban areas. Yet redevelopment activities are often more expensive and burdensome than building outside of urban areas. The feasibility of redevelopment and infill in our cities and older suburban areas can be threatened if the new stormwater requirements make redevelopment projects too costly, overly complex, or just plain impossible to comply with. For such areas to redevelop, new stormwater requirements must be flexible enough so builders can find ways to come into compliance with the many new requirements while still keeping building projects affordable and achievable.

"2010 Development Agreements Can Add Certainty in Uncertain Times"

Presented on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 2:00PM EST

Sponsored by the NAHB's Land Development Committee, this webinar explores the development process and how it has become increasingly complex, lengthy, costly, and uncertain, with approvals taking as long as four to seven years in some communities. It demonstrates how development agreements can provide greater certainty for both private developers and the public sector on how projects and the infrastructure needed to serve them are built and funded. National experts explain their legal framework, how to restructure agreements in projects that are changing hands during the downturn, and how they can support the use of innovative infrastructure approaches that require public and private sector collaboration.
