Why Join the NAHB Multifamily Council?

The NAHB Multifamily Council represents NAHB members who build rental apartment buildings, condominiums for sale, student rental housing and mixed-use development projects. Builders of multifamily properties – whether large communities with hundreds of units or two-story stacked flats with six units – need different information, different designs and plans, and more often than not, follow different building codes and zoning rules. Council members share business information and strategies, and work with NAHB’s Government Affairs and Housing Finance departments to advocate for a sensible regulatory environment and reasonable building code provisions.

NAHB Multifamily Council Membership

Most Multifamily Council members join as at-large members. They receive the benefits of membership in the national council, with its extensive network of building professionals and building-related resources.

If a region has a large number of multifamily builders and developers, a local council may be created as part of the area home builders association (HBA). Members of the local council receive all the benefits of at-large membership, plus the opportunity to work with chapter members local advocacy and events that affect the multifamily housing industry.

The cost to join the Multifamily Council at the national level is $100 annually. Members must join through a local HBA. If a local Multifamily Council does not exist at your local HBA, you are encouraged to join as an at-large member.

Benefits of Membership

The Council brings builders, developers, lenders, owners, managers, architects and designers together twice a year. NAHB’s midyear meeting facilitates discussion about member activities, priorities and concerns. At NAHB’s ann ual International Builders’ Show, the Multifamily Council hosts a three-day comprehensive education program, curates the show-floor to identify multifamily-relevant products and services, and offers multiple networking opportunities.

Many multifamily council members build or finance development using federal programs. As such,  NAHB monitors regulations governing these types of programs, and advocates, with member assistance, for a sensible regulatory environment.

The NAHB Multifamily Council provides members with access to exclusive NAHB research through the Multifamily Hotline, a bi-weekly newsletter that also delivers important information on regulations and legislation affecting council members and their businesses.

The council sponsors the annual Multifamily Pillars of the Industry Award - a nationally respected awards and recognition program that honors great projects as well as top notch companies, management and marketing campaigns. The award program’s credibility and prestige can lead to national marketing and media exposure for winners and finalists through the 50,000+ readers of NAHB publications, but also via NAHB media partners and consumer press.
