The American Character
NAHB is not an association of house builders, but rather of home builders, and as such, it is a reflection of the quintessential American desire for homeownership, as shelter, security, and equity.
In 1965 NAHB wrote and distributed a small brochure whose title neatly summarized the deep-seated feelings of most Americans: Better Living Begins When You Own a New Home. The 1960s brought advances in building materials and methods, as well as a belief that hard work should be rewarded, in this case with a new home.
Some 30 years later, NAHB’s National Survey on the Value of Homeownership confirmed that the dream was still alive: 90% of respondents said “living in good housing in a decent neighborhood” was essential to their family’s well-being.
