Advocacy Requires Access
NAHB’s ability to work with the federal government has served its members well, ensuring that the Association’s concerns are heard and addressed at the highest levels.
- In 1962 President Kennedy issued an Executive Order banning discrimination in housing, asking and receiving NAHB’s support, and publicly thanking NAHB afterward.
- In 1968 Congress passed the Fair Housing Act with strong NAHB backing.
- In 1983 President Reagan called home builders “the heroes of today’s economy,” noting builders’ accomplishments again three years later when presented with an NAHB report summarizing recent achievements.
- In 2004 President Bush credited NAHB with spurring the economy after the setbacks of 2001.
What sets NAHB apart is how authoritatively it speaks. NAHB’s reports (Housing Economics, Multifamily Outlook, and more than 120 others) are read by people at the White House, on Capitol Hill, and throughout the regulatory and business communities.
