| About Providence: |
Providence was founded in 1636 by renegade preacher Roger Williams, who was forced to flee Massachusetts because of religious persecution. Williams purchased land from the Narragansett Indians and started a new settlement with a policy of religious and political tolerance. He named his new home “Providence,” in thanks to God for protecting him during his exile from Massachusetts. In fact, the notion of separating church and state was pioneered by Williams in Rhode Island.
Providence is home to several outstanding higher education institutions including Brown University, University of Rhode Island, Bryant College, Roger Williams College, Johnson and Wales College and Rhode Island Institute of Art and Design.
One of Providence's most popular cultural events is WaterFire, a multi-sensory art installation, highlighted by a series of bonfires installed on the three rivers of downtown Providence. Providence has more degreed chefs per capita than any other city in the US.
Nearby Newport, with its coastal scenery, amazing architecture and deep history is a must-see during Seminar. Many museums plus mansions will offer you a glimpse of America's past along with the vibrant community today.

Downcity to Benefit Street at Sunrise
Friday, August 8, 2008
8:00 AM - 9:00 AM
Song lyrics tell us "Rhode Island is famous for you…" But Providence is famous for the extraordinary variety and quality of its built environment. Its architecture (1709 - 2008) and the history it bears witness to are renowned. When the walking tour leaves the Westin Hotel, walking east toward the Providence River, the early morning sky will provide a beautiful backdrop for the city's 18th and 19th century west side buildings: Biltmore Hotel (1922); City Hall (1878); Union Station (1898); Federal Courthouse (1908), celebrating its centennial this year.
The bridge across the Providence River to the east side and Benefit Street is located at College Street, an intersection of walkway, parkway, urban sculpture, university life, and revitalized waterfront. Benefit Street, laid out as a thoroughfare for the "benefit of all" in the mid-18th century, gives the appearance of being a museum street. In truth, it is a vital urban neighborhood enhanced by over 50 years of historic preservation effort. Primarily residential, Benefit Street's "mile of history" also boasts an important civic and educational center with the Providence Country Courthouse (1933), the Providence Athenaeum (1838) and the center of the Rhode Island School of Design campus. This walk provides a step back in time and a peek into the city's future.
